NCS Online is a school that provides fully online, full-time education to students in grades 6-12 across the state of Minnesota.

We offer students the opportunity to learn in a flexible environment while meeting the same rigorous academic standards as our two traditional in-person schools. We have highly qualified, Minnesota-licensed teachers and offer courses leading to diploma completion. Our curriculum is 100% online, completely asynchronous. Students can learn on their own schedule and at their own pace. Students are provided their own Chromebook but can also use their own devices to access the curriculum and work with teachers. Students have access to support services including academic advisors, English Language Learner support as well as special education services.

We bring together academics, technology, and service learning in an online environment to empower middle and high school students to reach their full potential.

Middle and high school is a pivotal time for students to gain independence and seize new opportunities, supported by intentional connections, challenges, and encouragement from caring adults. It should be an environment where every student feels safe and valued while discovering their unique strengths and interests.

Students experience the most significant physical, emotional, and social growth between grades 6 and 12. The balance between fitting in with peers and exploring new ideas is a defining aspect of the middle and high school experience. At NCS Online, our dedicated team of teachers and support staff is passionate about guiding students through this transformative journey.

Building on the multi-year success of District 4240, NCS Online is committed to creating innovative learning pathways. Our teachers are inspired to design opportunities that integrate computer science problem-solving skills across all subject areas, fostering a dynamic and engaging educational experience.

Day in the Life of a NCS Online Student

The NCS online schedule is built on asynchronous learning, which is balanced between digital and non-digital learning activities, and might include:

Assignment completion time
Independent practice or reading
Watching recorded teacher instruction
Providing and reviewing feedback
Collaboration and sharing
Creation and idea development

High expectations + High levels of support = engaged students

Expectations: Students are expected to make an effort to complete daily asynchronous tasks as outlined in the schedule. Parents or guardians are encouraged to contact the student’s teacher if their child is having difficulty completing asynchronous tasks each day.

Support: Guidance counselors, social workers, administrators, and teachers collaborate to provide comprehensive support to ensure student success. NCS Online staff are available to offer additional one-on-one support in academics, organization, or social-emotional learning for any student who needs it.

Family Tips for Success

Virtual learning provides students with a highly personalized experience, allowing for deeper connections between students and teachers, and offering the flexibility that many students and families appreciate.

Parents and guardians play a crucial role in student success, especially as a new school year begins. Here are some ways you can help your student thrive throughout the school year:

Maintain open and regular communication with your student, their teacher, and the school. Stay alert for messages from teachers and the school to keep updated on important news and developments. Understanding that relationships and communication differ in a virtual environment, we strive to build strong connections between families and staff, knowing that a robust school-family relationship benefits students.

Routines provide comfort and predictability for both students and adults. Help your student set and follow a daily routine for schoolwork, and establish regular household routines, such as consistent times for sleeping, waking, meals, and other healthy habits.

Middle and high school students often enjoy spending time on their devices. Encourage them to take breaks and engage in activities that don’t involve screens during free time, whether during the school day or personal/family time. Responsibilities like walking the dog, mowing the lawn, preparing a meal, or washing the car can be beneficial for students developing independence.

Adolescence is a time when students are challenged to manage their own organization at school. Support this by allowing them to organize their physical and digital workspaces, and offer help if you notice they are feeling overwhelmed or losing track of details.

There will be days when your student feels frustrated, discouraged, or uninspired. As a parent/guardian, your encouragement—especially on tough days—without trying to fix their problems will help build resilience and a positive mindset that will benefit them for years to come.

Although adolescents may roll their eyes or limit communication with parents/guardians, checking in on their school experience at least a couple of times each day is crucial. Ask how their school day is going, what they’re working on, and how they’re feeling. Even if you don’t always get detailed responses, you’re fostering a caring connection that makes it easier for them to ask for support or share exciting news when they need to.
